NEW WORK in 2010
My Encha range of jewellery will be expanding in 2010 to include this leaf brooch/pendant, new leaf earrings and introducing SEA URCHIN Pendants. This range will be available in Mart (artisan) in Brisbane and KickArts in Cairns by March 2010.

NEW OUTLET
A recent trip to Cairns resulted in a meeting with KICKARTS. As of mid February 2010, my work will now be represented by this contemporary gallery store in the heart of Cairns.

Travel! Travel! Travel in 2010! Yes, only 4 months back in Australia and I'm off to Europe again. I have worked solidly at my bench in Brisbane over the Christmas period to create a complete new range of jewellery.
These works will be available at most of my outlets in Australia.

Visit my blog for regular (or not so regular) updates from my travels in 2010.

NEW PUBLIC ART COMMISSION - 545 Queen Street, Brisbane
February 2008, I was commissioned to design the public art for the foyer of the newly redeveloped office building situated on 545 Queen Street, Brisbane. The building is positioned in the gateway between the Fortitude Valley and the Brisbane City.

My concept was to create 3-4 large pod forms inspired by the Moreton Bay fig trees on the West and the Brisbane River on the east of building. I wanted to design a stylized organic form that reflects the environment in which it is situated. The shadow is the key design feature of this sculpture. These pods are cast elements of Bronze and fabricated Brass welded together with an organic looking patina.

Image to the right is the concept proposed and has been approved and I am now commencing the Design Development stage.

...and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands
INSTALLED AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: June 2008

I have been commissioned to design the key sculpture to be situated in the courtyard of the Mater Mother's Ward in South Brisbane.

I highly recommend visiting the sculpture at night where you can take advantage of enjoying the buds light up. A little detail designed for the residents of the hospital during their stay.

ARTIST STATEMENT
The inspiration for this 8.2 metre high sculpture was an amalgamation of the Moreton Bay fig trees found in Aubigny Place, the pregnant form, and the sisters of mercy - all of which are the essence of Mater Mothers' hospital.

I instigated the concept with numerous copper tree forms with an intention to create an inviting and enchanting atmosphere to the courtyard for residents and visitors to the maternity ward. From a distance, visitors will see a tree of positive energy, representing life with the branches and illuminated buds reaching towards the natural light. On closer inspection however, i aimed for a deeper interaction with the sculpture for the women that share its location. The curves of the sculpture subtly reference a full term pregnant figure. The lines imply a sensual, maternal quality while the surface textures, created from Moreton bay fig tree bark, leaves and roots, are intimate and alluring through their tactile nature.

This is my first public art commission and has been an enjoyable journey developing my ideas and working through the fabrication processes. I would like to humbly acknowledge and thank the wonderful team at Urban Art projects for their dedication, hard work and support for this project.

Symbiosis - the relationship between the body and adornment

Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different species. Sometimes, a symbiotic relationship benefits both species. Sometimes however, one species benefits at the other’s expense, and in other cases neither species benefit.

Symbiosis, in relation to my project, is a collection of adornment inspired by Tasmania fungus and saprophytes and its relationship with its environment. I have replaced fungus with adornment and the environment with the body. These works aim to redefine jewellery as simple objects of desire and create adornment that relates to the part of the body it belongs to by feeding or growing from it. The work is part of the wearer and not just an item that is worn for decoration.
